ENPPI / PETROTRADE -Al-Amal Oil Production Facility – Process Control & Emergency Shutdown System

This project involved the implementation of a critical safety and control infrastructure for the Al-Amal oil production facility. The requirement was for a highly reliable, SIL2-certified system to manage both continuous process operations and emergency shutdown functions, ensuring the highest standards of operational integrity and personnel safety.

Project Scope

• Design & Supply of Integrated Control & Safety System: Full design, engineering, and supply of a unified system combining a Process Control System (PCS) and an Emergency Shutdown (ESD) system on a single, robust platform.
• High-Availability & Fault-Tolerant Architecture: Implementation based on redundant Siemens S7-400H for process control and S7-400FH for safety shutdowns, with distributed I/O systems.
• Comprehensive I/O Handling: Integration of approximately 200 redundant I/Os for process control and 96 I/Os for the ESD system, all marshalled through intrinsically safe barriers for operation in hazardous areas.
• Centralized Operations Hub: Supply and configuration of a combined Engineering/Operator workstation running a SCADA system for process visualization, control, and management of the ESD cause-and-effect matrix.

Key Benefits

• Certified Safety Integrity: The SIL2-certified S7-400FH platform ensures the ESD system meets international safety standards, providing guaranteed protection for personnel, equipment, and the environment.
• Maximum Operational Availability: The redundant S7-400H controllers and I/O networks ensure continuous process operation, minimizing production downtime and maximizing asset efficiency.
• Intrinsic Safety in Hazardous Areas: The use of certified intrinsic safety barriers allows for safe interconnection with field instruments in potentially explosive atmospheres.
• Unified Operator Awareness: The integrated SCADA system provides operators with a single view of both process and safety statuses, enabling informed decision-making and streamlined emergency response via the ESD matrix.

Outcome

The successful deployment of this state-of-the-art control and safety system provided Al-Amal with a future-proof, reliable, and safe automation backbone, safeguarding its oil production operations and ensuring compliance with stringent industry safety regulations.
