Expansion of PLC of Filter Package & Nitrogen Plant At MIDOR Refinery

Extending the functionality of the existing control system of Filter Package (Unit 08) & Nitrogen Plant (Unit 42) by adding extra two Filter banks & two new storage tanks respectively.

MIDOR Refinery Filter Package (Unit 08-FL-01) PLC Expansion

TechnipFMC, executing a project for the MIDOR Refinery, required a strategic expansion of the existing control system for a critical Filter Package (Unit 08-FL-01). The project aimed to seamlessly integrate two new filter banks into the operational control scheme without disrupting the existing infrastructure, thereby increasing the unit’s processing capacity and operational flexibility.

Project Scope

  • Expansion of the existing Siemens PLC system by adding two new redundant ET200M I/O racks to accommodate the I/O points for two additional filter banks.
  • Supply and installation of two new Ex-rated enclosures; one for housing the Siemens control system and another for solenoid driver modules.
  • Modification of the existing PLC control algorithm and software to integrate the new filter banks.
  • Comprehensive site services including supervision, commissioning, and startup activities, planned to be executed within a tight 5-day shutdown window.

Key Benefits

  • Non-disruptive expansion of plant capacity by leveraging the existing PLC infrastructure, minimizing integration risks and costs.
  • Maintained high system availability and reliability through the implementation of redundant I/O architecture for the new filter banks.
  • Safe operation in hazardous areas with the use of purpose-built Ex-rated enclosures for control and solenoid driving.
  • Efficient execution with minimal plant downtime through meticulous planning and a well-defined, short-duration shutdown schedule.

Outcome

MISC successfully delivered a plug-and-play expansion solution that enabled TechnipFMC and MIDOR to double the filter unit’s capacity. The project was completed with precision during the planned shutdown, ensuring a smooth integration with the legacy control system and immediate operational readiness of the new filter banks, thereby enhancing the refinery’s overall production capability.
