PETROBEL Gas Compressor Control System Upgrade

PETROBEL, one of Egypt’s leading oil & gas operators, entrusted MISC with the modernization of the control systems for 10 critical gas compressors. The old systems had become obsolete, limiting operational visibility and reliability. The goal was to migrate to state-of-the-art automation and protection platforms that would enhance safety, efficiency, and ease of operation.

Project Scope

  • Upgrade of 10 gas compressors:
  • 30K1 A/B, 30K2 A/B, 31K1 A/B, 34K1 A/B, and 52K1 A/B
  • Integration of modern automation and protection solutions to replace outdated systems

Technologies Implemented

  • 10 Siemens ET200SP Fail-Safe CPUs – SIL2 certified,, designed for high-integrity fail-safe applications
  • 7 Siemens TP1500 HMIs – for advanced operator control and visualization
  • 4 Anti-Surge Protection Systems – supplied by CCC (Compressor Controls Corporation)
  • 2 Vibration Monitoring Systems – from Bently Nevada for predictive maintenance and asset protection
  • 6 Operator Workstations (OWS) – for centralized monitoring and control

Key Benefits

  • Enhanced safety & reliability through SIL2-certified fail-safe systems
  • Full compressor operational visibility: monitoring of steps, permissives, alarms, and first-out indications
  • Improved operator flexibility: alarms and permissives can be monitored and bypassed directly from HMI/SCADA when required
  • Integration of advanced protection systems (anti-surge & vibration monitoring) to ensure safe and efficient compressor operation
  • Streamlined operation: easier monitoring and control from modern interfaces and centralized operator stations
    Outcome

Outcome

By successfully upgrading the control systems of 10 gas compressors, MISC delivered a robust, modernized solution that gave PETROBEL greater control, improved safety, and higher efficiency. This modernization ensures long-term reliability and positions PETROBEL’s gas compression assets for sustainable future operation.
